The MV Hondius cruise ship, carrying passengers from around the world, experienced an outbreak of Andes hantavirus (ANDV) confirmed by the WHO, resulting in three deaths. The ship has since relocated to the Canary Islands while authorities continue monitoring the remaining passengers. Although social media has fueled pandemic anxiety reminiscent of COVID-era concerns, virologists and immunologists emphasize that ANDV poses minimal pandemic risk. The virus spreads primarily through contact with infected rodent excretions; human-to-human transmission is rare except in cases of extremely close contact (sex partners ~18% risk; household contacts ~1%).
