A Dutch hospital quarantined 12 staff members for six weeks following a protocol breach involving a hantavirus patient admitted May 7. The patient was linked to an outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, where initial infection likely occurred during rodent exposure in Argentina before departure in April. Blood and urine samples were not processed under the strictest international protocols required for this hantavirus strain. As of mid-May, 11 confirmed and probable cases and 3 deaths have been reported across the Netherlands, Spain, France, and the United States. Health officials stress that person-to-person transmission is rare and the public risk remains low. Contact tracing continues for all cruise ship passengers, including 16 Americans in Nebraska quarantine who remain asymptomatic after recommended 42-day isolation periods.
