The UK Health Security Agency confirmed a suspected hantavirus case in a British national resident on Tristan da Cunha, a remote South Atlantic island territory with a population of 221, accessible only by boat. The patient had recently disembarked from cruise ship MV Hondius and required urgent oxygen support. Due to the island's isolation and depleting oxygen supplies, the Ministry of Defence mounted an emergency operation, parachuting six paratroopers from 16 Air Assault Brigade, an RAF consultant, and an army nurse from RAF Brize Norton via Ascension Island. Additional medical supplies and oxygen were also dropped. The operation covered 7,000 miles and required approximately 56 hours. Extraction plans involving repositioned ships and further medical support are under development.
